At Cargile ranches we are determined to stay at the leading edge of the cattle industry.  We operate a commercial cow herd on a variety of different range conditions in west Texas. Over the last century we have evolved our herd from Longhorn and Hereford to Angus, Brangus, and Beefmaster.  Our herd now is a reflection of the best of those breeds. We now run a herd that is fifty percent Angus and Black baldy and fifty percent red baldy which is a cross between Beefmaster and Hereford. We are currently using Angus, Red Angus, and Hereford Bulls.

We do not let the ever changing conditions of the country dictate to us the quality of the beef we are trying to raise for the consumer.  Our ranches are stocked from 40 acres per animal unit to around 100 acres per animal unit. The heifers we raise do not know where they are going to live and raise calves until they are shipped from our heifer breeding ranch to another location so its imperative that they all know how to make a living anywhere they go. Our cattle are bred to raise calves that meet or exceed the industry standard for Marbling, Tenderness, Carcass weights, and feed efficiently.
We use ultrasound technology to determine what heifers are kept as replacements. First the cattle are visually identified as heifers we think will make good cows, and then that set of heifers is sonogramed for carcass traits we feel are important to the bottom line of our operation and our customers operations. These traits are Tenderness, Marbling, Rib Eye Area and Shape, Stress, and Back Fat. We have a set number for each off these traits and if a heifer does not meet these criteria she is not kept as a replacement heifer. As our cattle improve so does our strict criteria for keeping heifers.

One of the keys to producing beef that is in high demand is selecting bulls that compliment our cow herd. We do not use one breeder or one breed to fill this need. We look for bulls that are easily adapted to our area even if that means buying bulls as calves and raising them ourselves. A bull can have the highest numbers in the world, but if he can't deliver them he is no good to us. Please contact us to discuss the bulls we use.

Our cattle fit a variety of niches in the industry from replacement quality females to cattle feeding grids and direct marketing beef brokers. Recently interest has grown in the grass fed beef circles for our steers and heifers. We have sent cattle to some grass finishing operations with positive feedback. We welcome this interest to help add value for us as well as our customers who may be looking for a way to market their calves.

We are an all natural producer of top quality beef raised in the shortgrass country of West Texas. Our conditions may be dry and tough, but our beef is juicy and tender.
